Sign-on letter to Make Moab Quiet Again

Noisy UTVs are ruining Moab, for residents and also for the large majority of visitors. UTVs are making it impossible to experience quiet in one's own home, on a trail, or anywhere at all near Moab. We can fight back and eventually win if we pressure local officials, state lawmakers, and federal land managers to do their jobs and make sure that UTV noise does not ruin our town for the vast majority who do not ride UTVs. About Us

Make Moab Quiet Again is a group of Moab-area residents who want to restore quiet to our community and neighborhoods. We are urging our City and County officials to take significant and meaningful steps to reduce UTV noise to preserve our quality of life. Local officials need to know that residents want them to take bold actions to deal with the increasing UTV noise problem.

Grand County residents are fed up with the impacts of UTV noise on our quality of life, health, and well-being. We request that:

Recent growth of UTV-related tourism and recreation in Grand County has dramatically increased noise pollution in our residential neighborhoods. This has resulted in an outpouring of citizen complaints to local governments.

In response, Grand County and the City of Moab recently approved temporary moratoriums on the issuance of new business licenses for the sale or rental of UTVs, UTV guided tours and outfitting, and Special Event Permits for UTV events.

We support the City's and County’s temporary moratoriums. We support elected officials and residents working together to draft local ordinances for UTV-related events and UTV rentals and tours.

We urge federal and state decision makers to:

We love to visit Moab, but we don't love it as much as we used to. The rapid increase in UTV noise is making Moab and the surrounding landscapes a much less pleasant place.

Most visitors come to the Moab area to experience the spectacular scenery in a relatively quiet way: car touring and sightseeing in national parks and public lands, hiking, biking, and floating rivers. Most visitors also enjoy lodging and dining in Moab. Over the last few years, all of these activities have become less enjoyable because of ever-increasing levels of UTV noise. Please don't let a noisy minority of visitors ruin Moab for the rest of us!

If Moab becomes known as the "noisy UTV capital of the world," we and other visitors will stop coming. Please don't let that happen.

Moab City and Grand County have taken initial steps toward restoring balance and enacting sensible controls on noise. We ask federal land managers and the state legislature to assist local governments in reducing noise.
